The Leonardo da Vinci Undergraduate Design Scholarship

This scholarship has been initiated by the Department of Mechanical Engineering to honor and encourage the adoption of the spirit and creative approach of a truly great man- Leonardo da Vinci.

Born in Italy in 1452, da Vinci was the living embodiment of what would later be described as a Renaissance Man. Leonardo didn't restrict his interests to one field - and all his work benefited from this innovative philosophy. His drawings demonstrate the mingling of scientific precision with an intense, imaginative intellect and his notebooks reveal the immense range and versatility of this genius.

He studied anatomy, he designed armored tanks and flying machines, he deduced a complete cosmology and he created works of art that, to this day, hang in museums around the world. Throughout his life Leonardo retained an intense curiosity about virtually every field of human endeavor and his drawings reveal a brilliant mind which, among other things, imagined inventions, that would in some instances not be realized for hundreds of years after his death.

Inventions such as the helicopter, the hang glider, the paddle boat, underwater breathing equipment and the ball bearing all appear in his detailed notes and drawings. He was a man who dared to dream and excel.
