Student Responsibilities
Each student team shall elect an individual who will assume responsibility for liaison with the Industrial Sponsor, the Faculty Advisor and the Course Coordinator. This liaison student shall regularly monitor his/her e-mail messages and will have an answering machine connected to their residential telephone.
The liaison student shall
contact his/her representative of the Industrial Sponsor within 24
hours of the project assignment in order to arrange for the first
plant trip and oral presentation. The first plant
trip should be completed soon in order to quickly develop an
in-depth understanding of the project. This trip
shall be completed before the end of the fourth class week
and the schedule of the Academic Advisor consulted before the trip
is finalized with the Industrial Advisor. Prior to this visit, students should quiz the sponsor for more
information on design parameters in order to develop their design
specification, and also their Gantt chart for planning the
project.
Meet with Faculty Advisor each week at the scheduled times to report on project progress and seek advice and feedback on
strategies and design methodologies. The students shall take turns to serve as the Chair of these meetings and also the
Secretary to record the Meeting’s Minutes. Thus these roles shall change each week throughout the semester. Not only
will the Chair control the exchanges in the meeting but s/he will also distribute the Meeting’s Agenda by email at least
24 hours before the meeting. The meeting’s agenda shall be based on the 3P Principle. Namely, the Progress made since
the last meeting; the Problems encountered since the last meeting; and the Proposals formulated for solving those problems.
The Secretary shall record the important decisions and discussions of the meeting and these Minutes shall be distributed
via email to the Industrial Advisors in addition to the team and the Academic Advisor.
Meet with your
design team for 2 hours each week to discuss relevant issues and
to determine individual responsibilities.
Work
individually 6 hours each week addressing design tasks assigned to
you at the team meetings.
Actively
contribute to the development of the reports submitted by the
design team. Submit the three reports to the
Course Coordinator for evaluation by the faculty and the staff. Submit reports to the Industrial Advisor for evaluation.
Contribute to the development of the design team's Final Oral Presentation
and the poster display at the Student Design Conference. This poster shall be on display throughout the time
of the conference from the beginning of the first student presentation through the Awards Ceremony.
There should be a group member at the board to explain the features to interested delegates and be
available to respond to questions. Be present and assist in the delivery of the final presentation by
the design team at the Student Design Conference.
Thus each person shall be responsible for delivering part of this oral presentation.
Evaluate the
oral presentations of the other teams in the ME481 session at the
Student Design Conference. The schedule describing the sessions
that each team is required to serve as an audience and evaluators
will be distributed during the week before the week of conference.
Attend the
weekly lectures.
Complete the
written closed-book short-question examination. This examination shall constitute the last day that the
class shall meet during the scheduled lecture period.
Produce a set of at least three very high resolution digitals images…at least 300 dpi. photographs… with different poses of the student team with the Industrial Advisors and their Academic Advisor in an appropriate industrial setting.
In addition, a digital head-and-shoulders image of
the primary Industrial Advisor is requested.
This set shall be delivered to Professor Thompson
seven weeks after the first class. One image shall
be selected for inclusion in the brochure for the Student
Design Conference. Please interact with the Mr Gunn to
receive guidance on what constitutes an acceptable “photograph”.
To generate a
written confidential evaluation of each team member and deliver it
to the Faculty Advisor on the Wednesday before the end
of classes. This evaluation shall include the name of each team member
other than the authors, and peers shall be assigned a grade using
the conventional scale.
Attendance at the Student Design Conference Awards
Ceremony is mandatory.
Each team shall interact with their Industrial
Advisor regularly by telephone, e-mail or facsimile message. Two weeks shall not elapse between these
interactions. Thus each week the team
will send their Industrial Advisor an update on progress, the
problems encountered and the proposals for solving those problems. It is important to ensure that the Industrial Advisor is
appraised of progress regularly. These interactions shall, at a very minimum, comprise a brief
list of accomplishments.
Students shall advise Ms. Bielawski, if they plan to travel to visit their sponsor
before they travel. She must also be advised of who is driving and whether the vehicle was
leased from Enterprise-Rent-A-Car or whether a private vehicle is to be used. PLEASE NOTE,
if the distance is farther than 200 miles round trip, and you wish to use your
personal vehicle, you will be reimbursed at the rate equivalent to leasing a vehicle:
$49/day + $30 for gas rather than the $0.48/mile university rate.
Receipts for purchases should be sent to Ms. Bielawski;
these receipts should clearly state what was purchased
and also your name. There is a form, which can be obtained
from Elaine in the ME office, to be completed and attached
to the receipts. Please note carefully that receipts submitted
after the drop-dead date (to be determined near the end of the term) will not be reimbursed.
