Background

Faculty Advisor Responsibilities

1. Meet with each design group for approximately 1 hour each week at the scheduled times in order to evaluate progress and provide direction to the group. Monitor student attendance at these meetings.

2. The faculty member is not expected to be an expert in all the disciplines associated with the execution of the project. Rather they are to be project managers directing the activities of the group. Motivate the student teams to exploit the human and technical resources of this major research university.

3. Promptly evaluate the reports generated by each design group in accordance with the ME481 grading policy. Return to the Course Coordinator the results of the grading process.

4. Attend and evaluate the Final Oral Presentation of each design group for which you have been responsible throughout the semester. This will be part of the Student Design Day on the last day of classes. Furthermore, should adjust your schedule so that you are able to attend the complete Student Design Conference.

5. You should visit the Industrial Sponsor with your student team in order to become better acquainted with the project, the people, and the industry in which they operate. This is especially important at the first plant trip when the group delivers their presentation on the design specification. The other critical time is when the group are transforming the concepts in to a product.

6. Ensure that the student teams review their project budgets each month. This information is available from Jill Bielawski (‘phone 517-353-8133 or email bielawsk@egr.msu.edu) in the Mechanical Engineering Department's Satellite Office in the Engineering Research Complex, A104 RCE.

7. Collect the confidential Student Evaluation Forms, developed by each Academic Advisor, on the Wednesday before the last day of classes.

8. Assign a professorial evaluation to each team member. Subsequently submit this evaluation to the Course Coordinator.
