A Gantt chart for planning and executing the project [Ch1, CED] . This document shall be submitted to the Faculty Advisor and the contact person at the industrial sponsor for their review before the end of the 2nd week of classes . The iterative process that ensues must be completed by the end of your plant trip to the sponsor. In the synthesis of your Gantt chart, you need to be sensitive to the time it takes to fabricate, and assemble, and test prototypical systems.
2. A comprehensive problem definition [Ch7, CED] , The First Progress Report cited in the grading policy section. This document will be graded for technical content by the Faculty Advisor and communication effectiveness [Appendix A, CED] by Mr C. Gunn. Three copies of this report shall be submitted to Professor Thompson two weeks after the first class before 12 noon . A fourth copy should be mailed by the student team to the Industrial Advisor using an overnight service such as Fedex. This report must be typographically designed and formatted professionally. The fourth copy shall be spiral-bound, or comb-bound, with a descriptive title, company logo on the cover, names of the different Industrial Advisors and the Academic Advisor. In addition, the title page shall be protected by a clear plastic sheet .
The Industrial Advisor should be given at least two days to critique the report before the group presentation is delivered to personnel at the sponsor's industrial facility. The final version of this report must be signed-off by the sponsor . This action avoids miss-understandings later. Several iterations of the report may be necessary involving both the student team and the Industrial Advisor before the final version is created.
Please note carefully that most teams find it extremely beneficial to visit the Industrial Sponsor's facilities at least once before they deliver the first oral presentation. Indeed this first visit frequently occurs in the first week of the semester. These early visits ensure that the team is able to move forward efficiently with the project through the development of a deeper understanding of the task.
3. The First Oral Presentation [Appendix A, CED] to the industrial sponsor at the industrial location before before the end of the third class week . This presentation shall present the ideas documented in The First Progress Report . These ideas pertain to the design specification. The audience will typically comprise management and technical personnel associated with the project. This activity will permit all of the industrial and academic partners to exchange ideas in the true spirit of concurrent engineering. The students will develop a better understanding of the problem from an industrial perspective. The production and design facilities can be visited, and ideas can be exchanged with all of the relevant people at the sponsor's facility. The Faculty Advisor shall accompany the student team on this trip. Teams are strongly encouraged to use laptop computers and video projectors as the basis for their presentations. Equipment can be loaned from Mr C. Gunn in Room 2443 EB.
4. A report, The Second Progress Report documented in the grading section, describing the creativity phase [Chs 8 & 9 CED] and the evaluation phase [Ch 10, CED] which are responsible for the selection of a specific conceptual design that is to be transformed into a product. This, too, must be signed-off by the industrial sponsor before the next stage is initiated and given to the Faculty Advisor. Again this report will be graded for both technical content by the Faculty Advisor and effective communication by Mr C. Gunn. Therefore three copies should be submitted to Professor Thompson for distribution and monitoring of progress. The copy for the industrial sponsor can be mailed directly to the Industrial Advisor at their facility. The Gantt chart will dictate the timing of this second report. However, it is anticipated that this report shall be presented approximately 5-8 weeks after the first report depending upon the attributes of the project.
5. The student team will deliver The Second Oral Presentation to the Industrial Sponsor at the plant typically around the middle of the semester . This presentation will describe the contents of the second report and the decisions made in the document. The focus of this meeting will be to collectively agree on the best concept to transform into the final product [Ch11 to 18 CED] . Again this meeting will typically be attended by a diverse group of management and technical people from the sponsor, and also the Faculty Advisor. The report must be delivered to these individuals several days before this meeting so that it can be evaluated. A laptop computer should again be employed as the basis for the presentation. Naturally other trips to the plant may be deemed desirable as the project evolves.
6. A 200-250 word synopsis of the project, written in the past tense and also at least four photographs…. digital images on a conventional CD of diameter 4.75 inches… with different poses (ideally the group should be actively focused on the subject of their project in an industrial setting ) will be submitted to the Professor Thompson seven weeks after the first class for publication in the Student Design Conference brochure. In addition, a portrait style digital photograph of the lead Industrial Advisor is requested. These photographs shall be created using a digital camera set for the maximum resolution; at least 300 dpi. The conference brochure will contain a schedule of events and a listing of the student projects. The synopsis will contain approximately 250 words describing the design project and the anticipated results. It shall be written in the format adopted by previous Student Design Conference brochures. Thus it will include the project title; the names and hometowns of the team members; the name of the Faculty Advisor; the name of the Industrial Advisor(s); and the name of the Industrial Sponsor. This document must be reviewed and signed-off by the Industrial Advisor before it is submitted to the Course Coordinator to ensure that it does not contain proprietary information. The Course Coordinator must be given a one-page document with the signature of the Industrial Advisor and also the CD containing a file of this text and the digital images.
The photographs, in different poses, will record the interaction of the team, dressed in professional attire( no jeans, tee shirts or business-casual clothing. Thus, for example, male students shall wear a formal shirt, a tie and sport coat) with their Industrial Advisor(s) and their Academic Advisor in an appropriate industrial setting relevant to their project description. This setting shall typically include the hardware that is the primary focus of the project. A digital camera is available from Mr C. Gunn, 2443EB.
CD with at least four different high-resolution images of the team, the Industrial Advisor(s) and the Academic Advisor
CD with several high-resolution images of the primary Industrial Advisor in a head-and-shoulders portrait pose. I cut out of the previous group image is unacceptable
Digital images for publication in the Design Day brochure will be created using at least 300 dpi. Namely the maximum resolution on a conventional commercial camera. The standard 70 dpi is unacceptable. Teams failing to abide by this regulation shall have their final grade reduced by 0.5.
CD describing the project synopsis
A printed version of the prose with the signature of a company representative
No diskettes shall be accepted
Students shall wear professional attire, since the best image will be featured in the Design Day brochure. Failure to comply with this request shall result in the final grade being reduced by 0.5 points. Thus a final class grade of 3.5 shall be reduced to 3.0.
Failure to provide the 4.75 inch diameter CD, enclosed in a protective housing, the page of text and the digital photographs before the due date will trigger the reduction of the team's final grade by one point. Thus, for example, a grade of 3.5 will be reduced to 2.5. The motivation for this action is that delays in submission of these items, adversely affect the manufacture of plaques for industrial sponsors and the printing of the conference brochure.
Six copies of a comprehensive Final Report will be submitted to the Course Coordinator, Professor Thompson, on the Wednesday before the end of classes . Two shall then be distributed to Mr. Gunn and the Faculty Advisor for evaluation. The third copy is retained for archival purposes. The team shall be responsible for using an overnight service, such as Fedex, to ship the final document to the Industrial Advisor. This will permit the Industrial Advisor to read the document before attending the Student Design Conference. Design Notebooks shall be submitted to the team's Faculty Advisor.
The comprehensive report shall be a document that meticulously details all of the semester's activities and accomplishments . Thus is should permit the uninformed reader to understand the assumptions embedded in mathematical models; to assemble the equipment employed to generate experimental results and to adopt the experimental procedures that were employed; to review the web sites that were consulted and the vendors that were contacted as part of the investigation; and to document the trade-offs considered in the evaluation of conceptual designs. These reports must contain a detailed economic analysis. Thus it will be a significant authoritative tome.
8. A working prototype of the product developed in the design-build-and-test process. This shall be demonstrated to the delegates at the Student Design Conference.
9. A poster presentation of your project for display at the Student Design Conference on the Second Floor Concourse of the Union Building . The poster shall typically be 30in by 40in and it shall contain the following minimal information: project title, name of the Industrial Sponsor, the name of the Industrial Advisor(s), the names of the team members, the name of the Faculty Advisor, a synopsis of the problem and the primary results. Certificates are awarded for the best posters at the conference awards ceremony. No more than $100 shall be invested in the poster.
10. An oral presentation at the end of semester Student Design Conference in the Union Building on the last day of classes. Each member of the group shall deliver part of a fifteen-minute presentation or a twenty-minute presentation depending upon the class size. Subsequently there shall be five minutes per group for question-and-answers.
