Background

Student Design Conference

1. The oral presentation associated with this class shall be delivered at the Mechanical Engineering Department's Student Design Conference in the Michigan State University Union Building . Each team of students shall attend the presentations in the ME481 Session(s). Thus each team delivering an oral presentation shall be assured of a large audience.

2. Professional attire is required as part of this oral presentation. Furthermore the duration of the presentation must comply with the specified 15-minute or 20-minute window stipulated in the conference program. A five-minute period for audience questions shall follow the presentation. An overhead projector and a system for presenting slides from a laptop computer shall be available. A TV and VCR can be provided too, if this is requested.

3. The Poster Session shall begin at the same time as the first conference presentation in the program. Hence at this time all posters should be on display in Parlor Room A. They should be staffed by at least one team member during the luncheon period.

4. The team project presentation at the poster session should feature as much hardware as possible.

5. Students shall be provided with conference lapel badges at the Conference Registration Desk on the Second Floor Concourse.

6.A team of august industrialists, academics and administrators shall evaluate the poster presentations. Certificates shall be awarded for the best three design presentations. The criteria are; layout, information conveyed, understanding, creativity and overall impression.

7. Certificates shall be awarded to the three best oral presentations at the conference. The presentations shall be judged by ME481 students. The criteria are; creativity, engineering analysis, quality of presentation, communication skills.

8. Posters shall cost no more than $100. Therefore professionally designed and manufactured laminated boards costing over $100 are prohibited.

9. Students are encouraged to invite friends, parents, grandparents and significant others to the conference.
