Project Description:
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is developing remote terrain mapping/sampling capabilities, and needs to be able to “stitch” together images from a scanning laser range detector to form an internal representation of surrounding terrain beyond what a single scan provides. The information will ultimately guide other, simpler robots, in taking samples at well-defined locations within the mapped terrain. Two students from CSE are already recruited to the team, because of its extensive software development requirements; ECE students are also needed to control the robot/laser and handle communications requirements.
