Discussion Questions:

General comments about discussion questions.
The discussion questions serve several purposes. The first, and
most important, is that they provide structure to the class meetings—that
is, most of the lectures are organized around these questions. The
way it works is that I will typically ask a student to answer one of the
current discussion questions—and we go from there. He or she may
be asked to explain the answer in more detail or someone else may be asked
if they agree with the first student’s response. If there is agreement,
that may be the end of it or I may further amplify on the answer.
Alternatively, if there is disagreement, debate (between the two students)
may ensue (and with others joining in). Thus, in-class discussion also
“takes off” from these questions. Come prepared with answers and
be prepared to defend them! Answers may be found in the assigned
readings or elsewhere. The first few are not (necessarily)
based on the text. The effort will be made to have about one set
of questions per week—when one set is completed, we will go on to the next
set. In general, they follow the syllabus.
The discussion questions also serve as a guide to what I consider to
be the most important points in the course material and/or text.
To that end, even if they aren’t all covered in class, the questions make
good study guides for examinations.
We will not necessarily discuss all the questions or in the precise
order shown here. You should, however, be prepared to answer the
questions in class—sometimes students are embarrassed when they are called
upon to answer questions and don’t know the answer. It is not my
intention to embarrass anyone—however, it is incumbent on you to come to
class prepared. This is NOT a class where you can come in and simply
take notes.
As noted in the syllabus, I keep track of your response to discussion
questions and participation in the ongoing discussions in class.
That information figures into your final grade.
