Sample result: change in number of stops due to variable dynamic speed as compared to constant speed.
Abstract
With proliferation of wireless communication, we can think of electronic speed signs that can display remotely-changeable speed limits (that are also electronically and remotely enforceable). This research will incorporate this form of speed and treat it as a decision variable that would be changed cooperatively and dynamically—along with signal displays—to manage traffic in signalized urban networks. Current control methods treat speed as a fixed "quantity," or constraint, that should be adhered to. Genetic algorithms will be used to find the optimum solutions.
