Abstract
Intelligent traffic signals are signals that use real-time traffic data to design optimal control. In congested conditions, effective control becomes very critical because of the serious consequences of grid-lock and traffic back-ups. This research used a simulation approach to evaluate the likely benefits if we are to use intelligent signals. Optimal control plans were generated using genetic algorithms. Depending on the specific traffic conditions and network topology, improvements of up to 25% are likely.
