Abstract
This project is concerned with the design of an algorithm that will automatically and adaptively regulate speed of freeway traffic when downstream incidents occur and result in temporary capacity reduction. This type of control is for future freeways that are quipped with wireless sensors and dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) systems and where dynamic speeds can be communicated to vehicles continuously over time and space. This type of control, once implemented, will enhance capacity utilization; safety is also likely to be enhanced. Genetic algorithms will be used to find optimal speed modulation schemes.
