Job Openings in the CEE Department
Tenure Track Faculty Positions in Civil Engineering
Michigan State University (MSU) Department of Civil and Environmental
Engineering CEE) invites applications for two tenure-track positions
in areas related to fire engineering, materials, structures, or sensors,
at any level. Qualified candidates will have demonstrated or have the
potential to demonstrate a strong record of funded research and scholarship,
and should have an interest in developing fundamental knowledge and
applying it to materials, infrastructure security, sensor technology,
or numerical modeling and simulation. These positions present an outstanding
opportunity to work with faculty actively engaged in research from the
nano to the macro scale on the behavior of structures under fire and
earthquakes, innovative materials, pavement engineering, non-destructive
evaluation, and modeling/simulation. Their work is facilitated by a
well-equipped laboratory for testing materials and large-scale structures,
and a unique structural fire testing facility. The department leads
a center on Structural Fire Testing and Diagnostics, and candidates
who can provide support to this center are desired. Collaborative opportunities
outside the department also exist (see MSU Engineering Research Centers
for a list of research centers and laboratories). These are continuing
academic-year positions (9 months per annum). A Ph.D. in engineering
or science is required. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged
to apply. Information about the department is available on the CEE Department Website.
The positions will be available August 16, 2008. Screening of applicants
will begin on January 1, 2008 and will proceed until the position is
filled.
MSU enjoys a park-like campus of over 2,000 developed acres and over
3,000 acres of outlying research facilities and natural areas. The campus
is adjacent to the city of East Lansing and the capital city of Lansing.
The Greater Lansing area has about 450,000 residents. The local communities
have excellent school systems and place a high value on education.
Please submit a letter describing research and teaching interests, a
detailed resume and the names and addresses of three or more references
to Chairperson, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Michigan
State University, East Lansing, Michigan, 48824-1226. Electronic submissions
are encouraged and may be sent to cee@egr.msu.edu.
Applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents must state
their visa type and status. Michigan State University is an Affirmative
Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. MSU is committed to achieving excellence
through cultural diversity. The university actively encourages applications
and/or nominations of women, persons of color, veterans and persons
with disabilities. The university is pro-active in exploring opportunities
for the employment of spouses.
Post-doctoral position in Structural/Fire Engineering available
Spring 2008
Michigan State University (MSU) Department of Civil and Environmental
Engineering (CEE) invites applications for a post-doctoral position
in the area of *Structural Fire engineering.* The selected candidate
will undertake advanced research and play an active role in the recently
established MSU Center on Structural Fire Engineering and Diagnostics.
Qualified candidates will have demonstrated or have the potential
to demonstrate a strong record of research and scholarship, and should
have an interest in developing fundamental knowledge on structural
and material responses under fire conditions. The candidate is expected
to be highly proficient in numerical modeling as it relates to structural
and heat transfer problems. Experience with full-scale experiments
on structural systems is also highly desirable. The position presents
an outstanding opportunity to work with an active research group engaged
in experimental and numerical modeling work on the behavior of materials
and structures under fire. The experimental work is facilitated by
a well-equipped structures and material testing laboratory, a unique
furnace facility for structural fire testing, and various instruments
for high temperature material property characterization.
The CEE department has an active structural fire engineering group
and leads the MSU Center on Structural Fire Engineering and Diagnostics.
Research in the Center is multi-disciplinary and involves theory,
computation, laboratory experimentation, and field studies. A candidate
who can provide support to this center is desired. The applicant is
expected to collaborate with other members of the Center from Mechanical
Engineering and Physics in the areas of combustion diagnostics and
sensors (see MSU Engineering Research Centers
for a list of research centers and laboratories). Information about
the CEE department is available at the CEE Department Website.
The duties with this position include undertaking research in structural
fire engineering, co-authoring of journal papers and research proposals,
and assisting the PI in guiding the work of graduate students and
affiliated researchers. A Ph.D. in civil or mechanical engineering
in structural, mechanics or fire engineering specializations is required.
In addition, the successful candidate will have strong oral and written
communication skills. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and
experience and includes benefits. The initial appointment will be
for one year with the possibility of a subsequent one-year term renewals.
The positions will be available January 2, 2008. Screening of applicants
will proceed until the position is filled.
