There are several aspects to the outreach and public service part of the mission of the department. One of the most significant parts are the ever-growing programs housed in the Highway Traffic Safety Programs which has a long history of providing short courses and other activities to traffic safety-oriented professionals throughout Michigan. In recent years, the HTSP offerings have been expanded both in traffic safety and related fields. Courses have been added in, for example, geometric design and, most recently, in pavement design and management.

There are also other activities in which departmental faculty participate. What is not shown are the substantial contributions that are made to professional societies (e.g., as committee chairpersons, conference organization, journal editors), service to the community (from local technically-oriented boards to soccer coaches), and general outreach. Some of these contributions are highlighted in the personal pages of our faculty and staff.
