Project title:
Systems level analysis of role of Hepatitis C virus in Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)
Project Description:
HCV infects 170million people world wide, and leads to cirrhosis and cancer in 50-80% of chronic infections. Due to lack of a suitable culture system, very little is known about how liver cells are transformed to cancerous cells or how the virus evades host immune response. Treatment methodologies till date have proven ineffective in more than 50% of cases.
The aim of my project is to identify putative targets in the HCV-Human interaction network, utilizing high-throughput expression data (bottoms up approach), that might be responsible for carcinogenesis and immune response evasion in this system. Further molecular analysis should confirm the role of these genes in HCV-promoted HCC and may serve as therapeutic targets in future.
