Dr. Wei Liao is leading an active research program on biological conversion of agricultural residues into bioenergy/chemical products at Michigan State University. Current research areas Dr. Liao is working on are: self-sustaining solar-bio-nano-based waste utilization system, integrated farm-based biorefining, improving energy efficiency for small-scale animal manure management system, methane/biorefinery feedstock co-production from lignocellulosic residues, algal cutlivation on waste streams for biofuel/chemical production.

Dr. Dana Kirk has been conducting research and development of waste-to-resource technologies for the past 10 years. He is an expert on design and commercialization of waste management systems. Dr. Kirk's Current research and development activities include: establishing a compus anaerobic digestion system to treat organic wastes, biogas purificaiton and upgrading, and nutrient management. Dr. Kirk is also intensively involved with waste-to-energy related extension and outreach activities.

Current research areas Dr. Balan is working on are: biomass process engineering, biomass conversion, renewable energy, value added products from agricultural residues and modeling integrated agricultural operations.

Dr. Cupples's research area is enviromental microbiology. Her current research activities are focusing on microbial degradation of soil and water contaminants, dehalogenation of the groundwater contaminants tetrachloroethene and trichloroethene and their reductive dechlorination products, cis-dichloroethene and vinyl chloride. Dr. Cupples's research group is developing and using molecular methods (qPCR, SIP, TRFLP, LAMP) to identify and quantify the microorganisms responsible for environmental contaminants (vinyl chloride, BTEX, MTBE, dioxane, RDX), and investigate fate of pharmaceuticals during wastewater treatment and land application of biosolids.

Dr. Engeda has extensive experience in experimental techniques and design of turbine components and considerable experience in diagnostics of flow field measurements in turbine components. He has performanced numerous studies on turbine aerodynamics and propulsion, turbulent flow, fuel (natural gas/biogas) pump design. In recognition of his achievement, he has been honored as ASME fellow, NASA fellow, best journal pape award, and keynote speaker at two major ASME conferences.

                                                                                            

Dr. Hodge's research focuses on conversion of the polymers contained in plant cell walls to fuels and chemicals using chemical and biotechnological routes. His current research projects include enzyme and microbial catalysis, chemical pretreatments, process integration, and process modeling and optimization.

Dr. Lee's research interests lie in the science and engineering of polymeric materials. His current research focus is on surface tuning and patterning that combine multiple opposite functional groups such as hydrophilic, hydrophobic, electrophostive and electronegative groups, and synthesize bio-based materials for applications of water reclamation and biosensors.

                                                                                 

The research area Dr. Yan Liu has been working on is bio-products and bio-energy development which comprises different microbial conversion processes such as fungal/bacterial fermentation, anaerobic digestion and algal cultivation. Those bioprocesses are converting different feedstocks mainly focusing on agricultural residues and wastes to produce various bioproducts such as organic acids, enzymes, pharmaceutical products and energy products such as ethanol, butanol and biodiesel.

Dr. Narayan has 153 refereed publications in leading journals to his credit, 28 issued patents, edited three books and one expert dossier in the area of bio-based polymeric materials. His research encompasses design & engineering of sustainable, biobased products, biodegradable plastics and polymers, biofiber reinforced composites, reactive extrusion polymerization and processing, studies in plastic end-of-life options like biodegradation and composting. His research involves developing carbon and environmental footprint of biobased and biodegradable plastics and products using biocarbon content analysis (ASTM D6866) and LCA (life cycle assessment) methodology.

                                                                                                                   

Dr. Reinhold's research group aims to advance use of plant-based ecological systems to address water quality issues, including pollution of waters by agricultural runoff, stormwater runoff, urban and agricultural wastewaters, and hazardous wastes. Research focuses on platn-based ecosystems, such as wetlands, filter strips, best management practices, and phytoremediation, and on how plants affect the fate of pollutants.

Dr. Reese has expertise in distance learning technology, sustainability and study abroad. Dr. Reese co-led three study abroad programs related to sustainability and renewable bioenergy systems with programs in Germany/Sweden, Australia and Costa Rica and has co-led the Sustainable Food, Environment and Social Systems in Australia 14 years.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       

Dr. Marsh's lab focuses on the structure of microbial communities in a variety of habitats including soils and contaminated sediments, fish eggs, pig tonsils, human gut and vaginal tract, and anaerobic bioreactors. The evolving collection of culture independent techniques (Sanger sequencing, T-RFLP, Q-PCR, arrays and next generation sequencing) has pushed our understanding of the complex structure of these varied microbial communities. In addition to describing the phylogenetic composition of these communities, Dr. Marsh's lab also studies microbial population change as a function of time and/or chemical perturbation.

Dr. Safferman conducts research on treatment trains to minimize and treat wastes including those originating from animal agriculture and food processing, the conversion of high energy waste to biogas that serves as a renewable energy source, and novel reactor designs such as anaerobic membrane systems and fluidized bed reactors. He leads the development of modeling and evaluating techniques for anaerobic digestion systems including empirically screening feedstock to estimate energy potential, conducting biogas potential assays, conducting bench-scale treatability testing, evaluating novel farm-scale technologies, and developing decision support guidance.            

Dr. Stevenson employs his technical expertise in algal taxonomy and ecology to test ecological theory and to develop approaches for solving environmental problems.  He is particularly interested in how ecological systems respond to environmental change. He also works with federal and state officials to develop protocols for ecological assessment. Working with resource managers and policy makers often stimulates new directions for his research. Most of his projects use field observations, experiments, and modeling to better understand the effects of natural and human factors on algae and the role of algae in aquatic ecosystems.
