MINUTES OF THE
Committee on Computing in Applied Mechanics (CONCAM)
ASME Applied Mechanics Division
8:00 AM
Monday November 12, 2001
International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition
New York, New York
Present: Abhijit Chandra, Tirupathi Chandrupatla, Howard Levine, Antoinette Maniatty, Gwang Jin Oh, Lorraine Olson, Alan Pifko, J. N. Reddy, Pat Smolinski
1. The minutes of the August 1, 2001 meeting at USNCCM in Dearborn, Michigan were approved.
2. Report on symposia at the 2001 ASME IMECE
The two sessions on Moving and Stationary Interfaces organized by P. Smolinski and T. Belytschko were finalized. The first session was scheduled for late Sunday afternoon (beginning at 5:30 pm) and were not well attended. The second session was more reasonably scheduled for Monday at 2:00 pm, and better attendance was anticipated.
The two sessions on Damage and Durability of Multifunctional Materials organized by A.M. Sastry and co-sponsored by the Materials Processing and Manufacturing committee were filled.
3. Proposed Symposia:
(A) 2002 ASME IMECE
November 17-22, New Orleans, LA
No-one from the Micro and Nanosystems-- Experiments and Computations symposium was able to attend the meeting, but they report that all preparations are proceeding normally. The symposium is jointly organized by Junghoo Lee, J.S. Chen, W.K. Liu and T. Belytschko. They are requesting 5 sessions from CONCAM and 1 session from MEMS. They plan to publish a proceedings jointly sponsored by the two committees.
Neither G. Paulino nor S. Mukherjee could attend the meeting to discuss their symposium Advances in Boundary Elements. However, they reported that all preparations are proceeding normally. They are requesting 3 sessions from CONCAM.
(B) 2003 ASME IMECE
November 16-21, Washington, DC
J. N Reddy reported on the symposium on Modelling and Design of Functionally Graded Materials, which is jointly organized by him, F. Bobaru, and G. Paulino. They have prepared a call for papers and are requesting 3 sessions from CONCAM.
A. Pifko and H. Levine proposed a new symposium on Advances in Numerical Modelling of Structural Failures, for which they requested 3 sessions from CONCAM.
(C) 2004 ASME IMECE
November 14-19, Anaheim, CA
No symposia were proposed for the 2004 IMECE at the committee meeting. Members of the committee were urged to consider whether they wished to propose symposia.
4. Other Relevant Congresses
(A) 14th. U.S. National Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics
June 23-28, 2002 Blacksburg, VA

(B) WCCM V Fifth World Congress on Computational Mechanics
July 7-12, 2002 Vienna Austria

5. Report of the Honors Subcommittee
Pat Smolinski reported that a number of Fellow nominations were in progress. Kummar Tamma is nominating Jerry Lin, Allan Pifko is nominating Howard Levine, and Greg Hulbert is nominating T.R. Chandrupatla. Members were urged to consider whether they knew of anyone who should be nominated, so that the committee could help identify a leader to handle the nomination. On other awards, Allan Pifko volunteered to check with the AMD honors committee to see how much activity in AMD and ASME awards were currently being encouraged.
6. Membership Matters
Jin Oh was introduced and made a friend of the committee.
7. Place and date of the next meeting
