Overview
Dear Colleague,
Recent ASEE data on the number of engineering faculty who are African-American, Hispanic or Native American (AAHNA) in Association of American Universities (AAU) institutions across the US shows significant under-representation, with members of this group constituting only 3.5% of the 8,400 engineering faculty at the 53 AAU institutions that provided data. AAHNA women are in even shorter supply, making up only about 0.5% of the engineering faculty. Among other problems, the lack of adequate representation deprives aspiring AAHNA students of the role models and mentors they need to achieve their goals, and puts US engineering education at risk.
To help remedy this situation, the National Science Foundation (NSF) is sponsoring a Faculty Development Workshop to be held October 16-19, 2004 in Arlington, VA. The workshop is sponsored by the Chemical and Transport Systems Division of the Directorate for Engineering at NSF, and is designed to improve the recruitment, retention and advancement of AAHNA engineering educators. The specific goals of the workshop are to:
a) Provide support and guidance to young AAHNA professors in engineering departments to guarantee a high rate of retention;
b) Recruit talented AAHNA candidates into engineering academic life, and help them learn the essentials of the system to insure their success and retention; and
c) Guarantee the availability of a diverse manpower that would maintain the excellence of engineering education in the United States.
The workshop is designed to provide relevant and specific information for the following groups of current and potential engineering faculty:
1. AAHNA Ph.D. students in the final year of graduate work, postdoctoral students in academic and industrial positions, and full- and part-time industrial employees who are seeking employment in academia as chemical engineering faculty (Group I)
2. AAHNA assistant professors (tenure-stream and newly-appointed) in all engineering disciplines (Group II)
3. AAHNA associate professors (tenured and untenured) in chemical engineering who are working towards the rank of full professor (Group III).
If you fall into one of these three categories and wish to participate in the workshop, please apply by September 6, 2004 . Also, if you know someone who would benefit from this workshop, please encourage them to apply. We expect the workshop to accommodate only about 65 participants, so please apply as soon as you can. Note that members of Group II will be given priority acceptance in all cases.
Housing and round-trip transportation will be provided. However, workshop participants will be responsible for transportation to and from their airport of departure, round-trip Metro and/or taxi fees from Washington National Airport to the conference, and for meals that are not provided by the workshop. A tentative workshop program is available online. |
