Chelsie Backus

2009-2010 Secretary

Hello, my name is Chelsie Backus and this year I will be serving as Secretary for AIChE. This is my fourth year in the Chemical Engineering Program and I plan to graduate in December of 2010.

I am originally from Midland, MI and graduated from Midland High in 2006. After completing high school I knew that I was very interested in both math and science, so I came to MSU pursuing a degree in engineering. I decided on Chemical Engineering after taking additional chemistry courses at MSU as well as researching the vast amount of career opportunities available to Chemical Engineers.

Currently, I am a co-op for Dow Chemical and have completed two work terms with the company. My first term was in South Charleston, WV and the next was in Edina, MN. My role was a production engineer co-op at each site. I have really enjoyed the co-op experience and all of the opportunities it has offered. Throughout each of my terms I was able to witness a different perspective of Chemical Engineering not presented in a classroom setting. I would highly encourage everyone to intern/co-op throughout their undergrad years; it is a great opportunity and will help you to understand what you want to do upon graduation.
