Mark Swartzlander

2008-2009 Vice President, Professional
I am the VP Professional for the 2008-09 school year. This is my second year on the executive
board; I held the VP Membership position last year. I am a Senior in Chemical Engineering. I graduated in 2005 from Allegan High School. When I came to MSU, I wasn’t sure what engineering
discipline to choose, so I took classes in both CHE and MSE (Material Science
and Engineering). After a few months,
and a meeting or two with professors, my choice was obvious, Chemical
Engineering. I enjoy the coursework, and
it opens the door to a wide variety of careers in numerous fields.
Two summers ago, I began doing research in a Biochemical
Engineering Laboratory. I really enjoy
working in the lab, performing experiments, and having a hand in ground
breaking research. Getting involved in
research is something that I highly recommend.
It’s another area of chemical engineering which most students overlook.
Last summer, I participated in a study abroad to Buenos Aires, Argentina. I expanded my knowledge of other cultures and
how globalization affects different regions of the world. It was one of the best experiences of my
life. I feel it was a beneficial
experience, and is worthwhile to anyone hoping to work for an international
corporation.
Upon my return from Argentina, I worked as a Quality
Engineering Intern at Perrigo Company.
My role in the quality department allowed me to view both the liquids
and tablets side of the company.
