General department Policies
Assignment of Mailbox and Issuing Keys
All graduate students in the department will be assigned a mailbox in
Room 219 Farrall Hall, and keys to Farrall Hall and required work areas.
Contact your major professor regarding keys to your space assignment
(desk, grad room or lab). Upon your departure from MSU, you will be
responsible for returning all keys. You will not receive your degree
until these keys are returned.
Telephone Calls and Faxes
You may make or receive local personal phone calls at your office number.
You may not make long-distance telephone calls unless they are billed
to your calling card or home telephone number. Long-distance calls are
acceptable if they are related to a research project for a faculty member.
You may have faxes sent to you at (517) 432-2892. You may receive or
send faxes only if they are related to a research project for a faculty
member. Please see your major professor’s secretary (355-4720)
for instructions on using the FAX machine. Personal faxes must be sent
from an off-campus location such as Paper Image or Kinko’s, etc.
Use of Photo Copy Machines
If your major professor has asked you to make photo copies you may use
either the copy machine on the first floor in Room 104 (Copy Center)
or the copy machine on the second floor in Room 217 (The Library). Your
major professor/advisor will supply you with a four-digit access code
to charge the copies to and account. Please see your major professor’s
secretary for instructions on using the copy machines.
Office Supplies
The Department will provide office supplies that are needed to conduct
research for your major professor. Please see your major professor’s
secretary for access to the supplies: paper, pen, pencils, tape, staples,
etc. Check with your major professor for an account number to order
toner cartridges and let your major professor's secretary know the product
number of the cartridge you need.
Faculty/Staff Lounge - 219 Farrall Hall
Graduate students of the BAE Department are welcome to use the Faculty/Staff
Lounge in Room 219 of Farrall Hall. Coffee is available for your consumption
at posted prices (deposit coins in the canister next to the coffee pots).
If you empty the coffee pot, please be kind enough to turn pot off or
make another pot of coffee for the person after you to enjoy! A refrigerator
and microwave are also available for your use. You are responsible for
cleaning up after yourself in the lounge.
Working in The Department
If you are employed in the department or working as a graduate assistant
you will need to know the following things:
1. If you are working in a lab, you must be trained
by the Office of Radiation, Chemical & Biological Safety for proper
lab procedures. You can check the ORCBS web site www.orcbs.msu.edu
for training dates (see Training Courses).
2. DO NOT USE your personal funds to purchase items
or supplies for your lab or research project. The Professor in charge
of the lab is responsible for any purchase made. You can make purchases
through either University Stores or through Purchasing. For proper
instructions on how to do this, first obtain a 6 digit account number
from the Professor in charge of the project, and contact the Professor’s
secretary for the proper procedure. Your Professor may tell you it
is okay for you to purchase needed items and get reimbursed at a later
date. Before you proceed and risk the chance of not getting reimbursed,
check with Cheryl Feldkamp (353-3975).
3. If you do not follow instruction #2, you will
need to have a receipt of any purchases you make. The receipt must
be turned in to the Professor’s secretary that same day you
make the purchase. You need to attach a note to the receipt with an
account number, your name, the reason for the purchase along with
your Professor’s initials on the receipt. Please remember that
this does not replace the normal purchasing procedure and, therefore,
cannot be used in situations that require a requisition and purchase
order.
4. If you plan to travel off campus outside of the Greater Lansing
Area, you must first request a travel authorization. To do this, talk
with the Professor in charge of the project to obtain an account number,
then see the Professor’s secretary who will do the needed paper
work and tell you the proper procedure to follow.
Use of Departmental Vehicles
If your Professor asks you to run work related errands, you should,
whenever possible, use one of the department vehicles. To use a department
vehicle, you must have an account number from your major professor.
Scheduling for the vehicles is done in Room 215 Farrall with Priscilla
Gardner (355-4722) or check with Barb, Nancy or Cheryl. After you have
used the vehicle, it is your responsibility to make sure that the gas
tank is full and that the vehicle is clean inside and out. The University
gas station and car wash are located at the Stadium; you use the green
card that is located in the glove compartment to purchase gas and wash
the vehicle. Failure to do so can lead to the loss of vehicle privileges.
Parking on Campus
Graduate Assistants may purchase a parking sticker to park on campus.
Graduate Assistants must provide the Department of Police and Public
Safety at MSU with a copy of their assistantship paperwork in order
to receive a parking permit. Graduate students not on an assistantship
must park in the commuter lots.
Department Library
The Department Library is located in Room 217 Farrall Hall. Publications
and resources pertaining to the Department’s areas of research
are available in the library. The library is available to all faculty,
staff, and students of the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Department.
Books may be checked out through Barb DeLong, 216 Farrall Hall.
Computer Labs in Farrall Hall
There are three computer labs in Farrall Hall available for your use.
The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Computer Labs located
in Room 105 and 106 are open to all students in The College of Agriculture
and Natural Resources. The Computer Lab located in Room 10 is open to
students who are members and pay dues to The ASAE Student Club. This
computer lab is funded through The College of Engineering and The ASAE
Student Club.
Use of Conference Rooms in Farrall Hall
Conference rooms are available for meetings and presentations. It is
necessary to schedule the conference room in advance to ensure there
are no scheduling conflicts. You may schedule use of Room 103 or Room
208 Farrall with Priscilla Gardner in Room 215 or check with Barb, Nancy
or Cheryl. You are responsible for returning the room to its original
condition after your use of the room.
