Voice of America Mandarin Interviewed Dr. Kirk Dolan
On November 9, 2005, Voice of America Mandarin interviewed Dr.
Kirk Dolan, Associate Professor with joint appointment in the Department
of Food Science and Human Nutrition and in the Department of Agricultural
Engineering, for a fourth time. The topic was obesity. The interview
lasted 25 minutes, and was conducted in Mandarin Chinese by conference
call from Washington, D.C. to E. Lansing at 6:30AM to allow live call-in
from listeners from China.
VOA interviewer Cheng Yang began by asking Dr. Dolan to define what
a balanced diet was. Her other questions included, “What is junk
food,” “Does jr-high-school cafeteria food provide the necessary
nutrition in the US,” “Should children go on diets,”
“What are the causes of obesity and can it lead to other diseases,”
“What do you think about California’s ban on junk food in
vending machines in schools,” “Is junk food tastier than
other food,” and “Is organic food more nutritious than non-organic
food?” All four callers from China asked questions related to
how they can gain weight while maintaining and improving health. Dr.
Dolan pointed out that a balanced diet includes eating in moderation
foods from all the food groups, and that eating the proper amount of
calories and exercising will in most cases help someone maintain proper
body weight. He also emphasized the role of parents in training children
to make proper food choices. MSU Faculty members Dr. Renfu Lu (Biosystems
and Agricultural Engineering), Dr. Lorraine Weatherspoon (Food Science
& Human Nutrition), and Dr. Kate Claycombe (Food Science & Human
Nutrition) contributed to the answers Dr. Dolan gave.
