Dr. Robert Gustafson chosen for the
2006 College of Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award

Professor and Chairperson Srivastava presented
Dr. Gustafson with his award at the Third Annual College of Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award Banquet, held May 6, 2006.

The Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) was honored to present Dr. Robert Gustafson (Ph.D., 1974, Agricultural Engineering) with the College of Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr Gustafson received his award at the Third Annual Alumni Awards Banquet held on Saturday, May 6, 2006.

Dr. Gustafson of Columbus, Ohio, has been associate dean for undergraduate education and student services in the College of Engineering at Ohio State University since 1999 as well as a professor of food, agricultural, and biological engineering. Prior to 1999, he served as department chair of the Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering Department for eleven years.

He received his bachelor of science and master of science degrees in agricultural engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Upon receiving his doctorate from Michigan State University, Gustafson began his academic career by joining the agricultural engineering faculty at the University of Minnesota; then in 1987 he moved to Ohio State University.

Dr. Ajit Srivastava observes Dr. Gustafson's cake cutting skills at the department's reception held prior to the College of Engineering Annual Awards banquet.

His scholarship includes work in grain quality as affected by drying and storage, finite element modeling, and electrical power applications in agriculture. He is a known expert in the area of neutral-to-earth voltage as related to livestock facilities. He conducted original work on animal sensitivity to electrical current, source identification procedures, and designs for problem mitigation and prevention. He authored the textbook "Fundamentals of Electricity for Agriculture" published by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering. He has been recognized twice with the McQuigg Award for outstanding teaching by College of Engineering students. He has been instrumental in the growth of the college’s nationally recognized first-year engineering program.

A Fellow of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, Gustafson has served on the board of trustees and was president of the society for 2003-2004. He is a founding member of the education division of ASABE and served as its first division chair. He was also recognized by the society with its Young Educator Award and FIEI Electrification Award. He is a member of the ASABE Foundation Board. He is also a member of IEEE, NCATA (North American College and Teachers of Agriculture) and CAST (Council of Agricultural Science and Technology). He has been recognized with membership in the following honorary societies: Alpha Epsilon, Gamma Sigma Delta, Sigma Tau, Sigma Xi, Omicron Delta Kappa, Texnikoi (honorary member), and Tau Beta Pi.

Bob and his wife, Dr. Yvonne Gustafson, have two children, Amanda of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Andrew of Columbus, Ohio. Yvonne is a parent educator and consultant with the Elizabeth Blackwell Women’s Center of Ohio Health in Columbus. They are active members of Worthington Presbyterian Church in Worthington, Ohio.

We congratulate Dr. Gustafson on receiving the alumni award and salute his numerous contributions and accomplishments.
