
Dr. Robert Gustafson chosen for the
2006 College of Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award

The Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) was
honored to present Dr. Robert Gustafson (Ph.D., 1974, Agricultural Engineering)
with the College of Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr Gustafson
received his award at the Third Annual Alumni Awards Banquet held on
Saturday, May 6, 2006.
Dr. Gustafson of Columbus, Ohio, has been associate dean for undergraduate
education and student services in the College of Engineering at Ohio
State University since 1999 as well as a professor of food, agricultural,
and biological engineering. Prior to 1999, he served as department chair
of the Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering Department for
eleven years.
He received his bachelor of science and master of science degrees in
agricultural engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
Upon receiving his doctorate from Michigan State University, Gustafson
began his academic career by joining the agricultural engineering faculty
at the University of Minnesota; then in 1987 he moved to Ohio State
University.

His scholarship includes work in grain quality as affected by drying
and storage, finite element modeling, and electrical power applications
in agriculture. He is a known expert in the area of neutral-to-earth
voltage as related to livestock facilities. He conducted original work
on animal sensitivity to electrical current, source identification procedures,
and designs for problem mitigation and prevention. He authored the textbook
"Fundamentals of Electricity for Agriculture" published by
the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering. He
has been recognized twice with the McQuigg Award for outstanding teaching
by College of Engineering students. He has been instrumental in the
growth of the college’s nationally recognized first-year engineering
program.
A Fellow of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers,
Gustafson has served on the board of trustees and was president of the
society for 2003-2004. He is a founding member of the education division
of ASABE and served as its first division chair. He was also recognized
by the society with its Young Educator Award and FIEI Electrification
Award. He is a member of the ASABE Foundation Board. He is also a member
of IEEE, NCATA (North American College and Teachers of Agriculture)
and CAST (Council of Agricultural Science and Technology). He has been
recognized with membership in the following honorary societies: Alpha
Epsilon, Gamma Sigma Delta, Sigma Tau, Sigma Xi, Omicron Delta Kappa,
Texnikoi (honorary member), and Tau Beta Pi.
Bob and his wife, Dr. Yvonne Gustafson, have two children, Amanda of
Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Andrew of Columbus, Ohio. Yvonne is a parent
educator and consultant with the Elizabeth Blackwell Women’s Center
of Ohio Health in Columbus. They are active members of Worthington Presbyterian
Church in Worthington, Ohio.
We congratulate Dr. Gustafson on receiving the alumni award and salute
his numerous contributions and accomplishments.
