Renfu Lu, adjunct associate professor of biosystems and agricultural
engineering, is the lead researcher on a noninvasive apple-inspection
project that uses lasers to "taste" pieces of produce to assess
their internal qualities. "By measuring light scattering in the
fruit, mathematical models can determine its firmness and sweetness,"
says Lu.

Apple Quality’s More Than Skin Deep
Publication: AGRICULTURAL
RESEARCH MAGAZINE
Date Published: May, 2005
Renfu Lu, adjunct associate professor of biosystems and agricultural
engineering, and Yankun Peng, MSU visiting assistant professor of biosystems
and agricultural engineering, have developed laser vision prototypes
that can "taste" pieces of produce to assess their internal
qualities. “Nondestructive technologies for grading and sorting
fruit by internal quality such as firmness and sugar and acid
content are a top priority,” says Lu. “Such technologies
would ensure a consistent premium quality product, increase consumer
satisfaction, and enhance the U.S. fruit industry’s competitiveness
and profitability.”
