Granger landfill, located in Grand Ledge, Michigan, must reduce the ammonia concentrations in their leachate from 500 ppm to less then 50 ppm before the waste water treatment plant will accept their discharge. Their current constructed wetland is not adequately reducing the ammonia levels necessitating the use of a costly mechanical air stripper. Natural Solutions built and tested three bench–scale pretreatment
options for reduction of ammonia levels. The options include Dual Aeration,
Microbial Sponge, and a Subsurface Wetland. Granger Landfill will be implementing
a full scale pretreatment system based upon our analysis and recommendations.
After construction and verification at the Grand Ledge Landfill, Granger
will be able to remove the costly air stripper from their constructed
wetland treatment system. Advisors: Dr. Theodore Loudon, P.E. Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering Questions or comments contact: webmaster Past
