Demonstrations, Education, Commercial Exhibits
Take Center Stage at Ag Expo 2003

By: Laura Probyn

EAST LANSING, Mich.-- Demonstrations, talks and commercial exhibits on such topics as manure handling, woodlot management, composting and gardening will headline Ag Expo 2003, July 22-24 at Michigan State University (MSU).

With current attention on environmental issues, manure management is an important consideration for both livestock and crop producers. Ag Expo demonstrations will focus on new manure storage, transportation and spreading technologies.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources forester David Neumann will offer suggestions for various woodlot maintenance and management strategies at a nearby wooded site. On the Expo grounds he'll show various tree seedling planting spacing and weed control options.

MSU Master Gardeners will be on site to discuss vegetable gardening, including transplanting, container gardening and specialty vegetables. "We're planning on providing a strong educational component that will complement the many exceptional commercial exhibitors who will be with us this year," says Tim Harrigan, Ag Expo director. "Our focus is on providing farmers with information about how they can run their operations so they are both environmentally and economically sound."

MSU educators -- from agronomists and agricultural engineers to foresters, veterinarians, animal scientists and others -- will staff exhibits on the main site. They will be on hand to discuss their work and share information on various aspects of farm business management and production.

Ag Expo will feature commercial farm equipment from throughout the Midwest and several Canadian provinces on the 35-acre main exhibition site and the 40-acre field demonstration area. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 22 and 23 (Tuesday and Wednesday) and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 24. All Ag Expo events and parking at Farm Lane and Mt. Hope Road are free.
