Undergraduate Scholarship Recipient
Biosystems engineering sophomore, Michael Wiederoder, a professorial assistant in Dr. Alocila's biosensors laboratory, has been selected to receive the prestigious Department of Homeland Security Undergraduate Scholarship. This is the second time a biosystems engineering student has garnered the distinguished award.
Michael's research will focus on creating biosensors that will recognize pathogenic bacteria. He will also be studying extracts from exotic natural products for possible medical applications.
Michael's scholarship includes tuition and fees, as well as a monthly stipend for the academic calendar. He will also be eligible for a weekly summer research internship stipend at a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) affiliated facility and may request a one-year renewal for his senior year.
The DHS realizes that the country’s strong science and technology community provides a critical advantage in the development and implementation of counter-terrorist measures and other DHS objectives.The DHS Scholarship and Fellowship Program is intended to ensure a diverse, highly talented science and technology community that can develop and implement counter-terrorist measures.
