As a career army officer’s daughter, Cynthia Meeusen moved 17 times before entering her freshman year at Michigan State University (MSU). While at MSU, Cynthia obtained both a Bachelor of Science (1998) and a Master of Science, with honors, (2000) in Biosystems Engineering. Cynthia was also co-inventor on two patents as a graduate student studying under Dr. Alocilja; her focus was on biosensors in the food environment.
Cynthia currently lives in Davenport, Florida and has worked as a biological engineer at the Walt Disney World, Epcot Center, Land Pavilion. Her responsibilities included overseeing and designing new biological growing systems, including hydroponics, aquaponics, bag and sand culture, thin film growing techniques, and aquaculture. She worked in conjunction with the USDA Biotechnology Research Lab and the Kennedy Space Center. Cynthia consulted on NASA’s Martian Greenhouse project, which is part of the Advanced Life Support System for the mission to Mars.
In 2005, Cynthia accepted a position as senior controls engineer, Scientific Systems at Walt Disney World Company designing control systems for new and existing rides and attractions. She has worked on Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean, Primeval Whirl, Mexico’s El Rio del Tiempo (at Epcot), and most recently the Tower of Terror at Disney’s MGM Studios.
