DESIGN OF ONSITE AND DECENTRALIZED
WASTEWATER SYSTEMS I
Michigan Onsite Wastewater Training and Education Center
12 Mile Road at Meadowbrook in Novi

October 1 & 2, 2002

This is a new basic class for engineers and others who wish to be involved in the design of onsite and decentralized systems and for regulators who are called on to evaluate and approve designs for alternative systems. It will include a brief discussion of wastewater treatment by soils but will stress design of alternative systems for problem sites. Topics will include designs using mounds, at-grade systems, sand filters, alternative media filters, aerobic treatment units and constructed wetlands.

Instructors: Ted Loudon and Del Mokma, Michigan State University; Larry Stephens, Stephens Consulting Service; Ron Lindsay and/or Dan Milan, Milan Engineered Systems.

Ted Loudon, P.E., Professor and Extension Agricultural Engineer at MSU. Ted has over 20 years practical experience in education and applied research related to onsite and decentralized wastewater treatment systems. He is recognized for his research work related to cold climate performance of sand filters and shallow soil absorption systems and is involved in both state and national efforts to further improve practice in onsite wastewater treatment. Del Mokma, Professor and Extension Specialist in Soil Science at MSU. Del teaches academic courses in soil classification and has extensive research based experience in soil and site evaluation for onsite wastewater treatment systems. Larry Stephens is owner and principal engineer, Stephens Consulting Services, P.C. Haslett, Michigan. Larry has been a private consultant for over 20 years and spent 12 years as a regulator of onsite systems in the Michigan Department of Public Health. He specializes in onsite wastewater treatment systems, participates in national onsite programs and issues, and shares his knowledge openly. Ron Lindsay, Onsite System Consultant and Maintenance Specialist with Milan Engineered Systems. Ron is recognized as the most knowledgeable person in Michigan in alternative onsite system trouble shooting and maintenance. Dan Milan is a partner in Milan Engineered Systems. He is a major supplier of components for onsite systems in Michigan and helps designers select appropriate equipment. Others may take part, depending on availability.
