Matt Staswiewicz, Biosystems undergraduate and current engineering research intern, gave an oral presentation at the Annual Meeting of the Institute of Food Technologists titled:

"Modeling the effect of prior thermal history on the thermal inactivation rate of Salmonella in turkey"

The meeting was held in New Orleans, Louisiana on July 17 - 20, 2005

Rochelle Lee Vecchio, Biosystems undergraduate, was the 2005 recipient of the Paul Girton Food Engineering Scholarship for $2,500 from the International Association of Food Industry Suppliers Foundation. In addition to the award, a travel grant will be made for Rochelle to attend the Worldwide Food Expo 2005, Chicago, Illinois. Congratulations Rochelle!

Amanda Herzog, Biosystems undergraduate, attended the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) conference in Atlanta Georgia. Her abstract of the research was accepted allowing her to create and present a poster. While there, Amanda said she met some famous scientists. She was inspired and is excited to get back to the lab so that she will be able to present at next year's conference!

Michigan State Horticultural Society and the Michigan Cherry Committee has awarded Dr. Dan Guyer for his proposed project "Integrating Cherry Cooling and Water Resource Management"

National Science Foundation has
awarded Dr. Evangelyn C. Alocilja and Dr. Mohanty and Dr. Tarabara for their proposed project entitled "NANOSCALE DESIGN OF AQUEOUS CARBON NANOTUBE-REINFORCED MOLECULAR TRANSDUCERS FOR BIOSENSORS”

Simon Davies, Specialist, left the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering as of June 30, 2005. He will be pursuing other opportunities at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. His wife, Susan Masten, will be the Associate Dean of the College of Engineering.
