ONSITE WASTEWATER SYSTEMS MAINTENANCE Training for routine maintenance of conventional and alternative onsite systems including mounds, sand filters, backed bed filters, aerobic treatment units, and all pump systems and mounds October 22 & 23, 2002 at Michigan Onsite Wastewater Training and Education Center MSU-Tollgate Education Center 12 Mile Rd. at Meadowbrook Novi, Michigan Developed by the Michigan Technical Advisory Council for Onsite Wastewater Treatment In Cooperation with Departments of Agricultural Engineering and Crop and Soil Sciences and MSU Extension.

This maintenance workshop is designed to prepare wastewater professionals to provide the necessary maintenance services on conventional and alternative systems. Any system having a pump or other mechanical device should have at least annual visits by a trained professional. Put yourself in a leadership position by attending this workshop taught by instructors who are actively involved in system maintenance.

Course instructors are Ted Loudon, P.E., Professor and Extension Agricultural Engineer at MSU, Ron Lindsay, Onsite System Consultant and Maintenance Specialist with Milan Engineered Systems, and Bill Gregory, owner of WG Sales in Howell. Others may take part, depending on availability. Ted Loudon has over 20 years practical experience onsite systems. He has been responsible for maintenance of numerous experimental systems including large and individual home sand filters, various innovative biofilters and conventional systems. Ron Lindsay is recognized as the most knowledgeable person in Michigan in alternative onsite system trouble shooting and maintenance. Bill Gregory has provided pump service and trouble shooting services for various onsite applications for over 20 years. He is the one called when no one else can find the problem.

First Day - October 22 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

  • Use of an Owner Questionnaire
  • Conventional soil absorption --septic tank maintenance issues (field illustrations)
  • Wastewater samples--when, how, and what they will tell you
  • Pumps and pumping chambers (field trouble shooting)
  • Pump controls, floats, timers (field trouble shooting)
  • Pressure distribution pipe networks (field maintenance illustrations)

Second Day - October 23 (8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.)

  • Review and discussion of the first day
  • Mounds (Maintenance procedure and check list, Setting up a mound for maintenance, Trouble shooting a "challenged" mound, Flow measurement and dose volumes)
  • Sand filters (Principles of operation--biological and physical; Proper designs, special needs of single pass and recirculating types; Setting up a sand filter for maintenance; Use of a maintenance check list)
  • Other packed bed filters (e.g., Advantex ™, Waterloo Biofilter)
  • Aerobic treatment units
  • Trouble shooting failed or failing systems–case examples
  • Other alternative systems you may encounter

Make check payable to Michigan State University at $175 per person. $150 for members of MOWRA, MEHA or MSTA, just send us a copy of your 2002 membership card or receipt. Fee includes technical materials and lunch for two days. Registration & fee due one (1) week prior to workshop. Cancellation Policy: Up to 3 days prior to workshop - full refund less a $25 administrative fee. No refunds after this time.
