Memory Lane

By: Dr. Gerrish

Do you remember the majestic elm tree directly south of Farrall Hall? You probably sat in its shade to enjoy an ice cream cone, or maybe you just admired it for its classic shape and beauty. We are sad to announce that the landmark tree finally succumbed to Dutch Elm disease during the hot spell in late June and early July. All that remains is its stump and soon that, too, will disappear to make way for a new planting. Look carefully at the top view of the stump, and try to count the rings since you were a student. The dark zone marks the years of disease-impairment.

If you agree that the grand old tree was a monument, consider planting a new tree in its honor somewhere on your property. But not an Elm, of course. And when you enjoy your tree's shade on a warm summer day, hum a stanza of "M-S-U, we love thy shadows . . . "
