Below you will find a list of the instructors in the Electrical Technology program at Michigan State University. The titles are described below:

Mr. Althouse is coordinator of the Electrical Technology program. He is an Instructor of Agricultural Engineering, a licensed Master Electrician and Electrical Contractor. He has taught all of the courses. He also supervises the on-the-job training portion of the program. Mr. Althouse is the author of numerous electrical trade educational papers, and a half semester electrical course utilized by many high schools in Michigan. He has coordinated research dealing with electrical wiring applications in agriculture and provides technical support for the National Electric Code. He is the co-author of the nationally recognized text book Interpreting the National Electric Code, now in its sixth edition.



William Bickert, Professor, Ph.D.

Dr. Bickert served as the rural electrification group leader in the latter 1960's with principle responsibilities in teaching and research. Dr. Bickert developed the basic curriculum for the Electrical Technology program in 1969 and taught some of the courses when the program was new. He continues as a consultant to the program today.



John B. Gerrish, Professor, PhD., P.E., Emeritus

Dr. Gerrish is a Professor, Emeritus and Professional Engineer and has taught several of the Electrical Technology courses since the 1970's. He has a degree in electrical engineering and agricultural engineering. He is a specialist in magnetism, electric motor design and applications, electrical controls and electronics. He is nationally recognized for his work with electric control applications in agriculture. Dr. Gerrish continues to serve as a consultant to the program.



Truman C. Surbrook, Professor, Ph.D., P.E., Master Electrician

Dr. Surbrook was raised on a dairy farm and was a partner at Grand Valley Farms until 1965 when he joined the Agricultural Engineering Department staff as an instructor with responsibilities as an Extension specialists dealing with rural electrification issues. Starting in 1970 he served as instructor and the first Electrical Technology program coordinator. He served as program coordinator until 1992. He continues to teach several Electrical Technology courses. Presently Dr. Surbrook’s responsibilities are in teaching and research. He is one of the nations leading experts dealing with the issue of stray voltage on farms. He is the author of two text books, Agricultural Electrification and Interpreting the National Electrical Code, Delmar Publishers. Dr. Surbrook has served as a consultant to companies and governmental agencies across the United States for the past twenty years, and has lectured nation wide on the electrical code and stray voltage. For twelve years Dr. Surbrook served on NFPA panels that write the National Electrical Code.




Dave Filipiak - Visiting Lecturer, Master Electrician; Electrical Contractor ; Member - Associated Builders & Contractors, SE Michigan

Mr. Filipiak is owner and manager of Sky Electric Company, Lapeer, MI. He has been actively engaged in the electrical trade for thirty years. He has owned and operated his electrical contracting business for more than twenty years, employing a number of program graduates. Presently his teaching specialty is electric motor controls and electrical system planning.
