Admission to the College

Students are admitted to the College of Engineering as soon as they have completed the required core courses:

• Math 132 and Math 133. Students must have a minimum 2.0 grade point average or higher in all mathematics courses completed at the time of admission (this does not include MTH 1825).
• Chemistry 141 or 151 for all majors except Computer Science
• Physics 183 or 183B
• Engineering 100 and Engineering 102.  Student in Computer Engineering and Computer Science are required to take EGR 100 only.
• Computer Science 231 for Computer Engineering and Computer Science majors only.

Also, who has met specific GPA requirements for their declared major.  All eligible students are automatically reviewed once they have:

• completed the required courses
• declared a degree granting Engineering major
• and achieved a specific grade point average within that major.

Grade point average requirements for College of Engineering majors:

• 3.0 - Mechanical Engineering
• 2.9 - Applied Engineering Sciences, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering
• 2.8 - Biosystems Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Materials Science & Engineering

(NOTE: Students whose major is listed as Engineering No-Preference will not be admitted until they declare a degree-granting major.) 

External Transfer Students applying to the College of Engineering

Transferring to Michigan State University is competitive, but all of our majors accept transfer students each year.  Highly qualified students wishing to be an MSU Spartan engineer are encouraged to apply!  Most admissions decision will be make in late January and February.  Therefore, priority is usually given to early applicants.  Students interested in transferring to MSU as an engine ring major should contact Mr. Drew Kim at (517) 353-7282 to make an appointment.

Transfer students must apply via the Office of Admissions process.  The following requirements must be fulfilled in order to transfer to MSU in the College of Engineering:

• Completion of at least 56 semester credit hours of the first two years of the engineering transfer program.
• Completion of at least Calculus I, II and III; Chemistry; Engineering Physics I and a Computing Course for admission consideration.  Students with more course work completed than the minimum are giving priority. (Exception: Computer Science majors substitute a Life Science in place of Chemistry.)
• A minimum grade point average of 3.00 is required for consideration. (note: This grade point may be calculated differently by MSU than at student's former school(s) and is based upon a 4.0 grading scale.) International students must have a 3.50 minimum grade point average.

Transfer students with junior standing who entered majors other then engineering must complete a minimum of 12 total credits and a minimum of 10 technical credits, with the sum of total and technical credits no less then 24 (e.g. 14 credits with 10 technical, or 12 credits all technical).  These students are then considered for admission to an engineering major based on MSU grades using the criteria for internal students.

MSU's Academic Standing of Undergraduate Students

Academic Standing of Undergraduate Students (ASUS) applied to all engineering students.  The university requires a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 2.00 or above for graduation.  At the end of any semester whereas a student's cumulative GPA falls below 2.00, the student is assigned to a warning status designated as probation.  For more information on MSU's Academic Standing of Undergraduate Students.

Michigan State University employs three systems of grading: a numerical system, a supplemental credit-no credit system, and a limited pass-no-grade system.
