Transfer Courses
Current MSU students considering transferring courses from another
college or university as a Guest Student should follow the steps
below to ensure that course work does transfer to and is evaluated
by MSU in a timely and accurate fashion.
- Discuss appropriate courses with your academic adviser.
- Check the Transfer
MSU Equivalencies page at http://transfer.msu.edu/
to determine if the course you want to transfer meets a requirement
in your major. (The "Basics" column does not apply
to current MSU students.) If you are unsure of how to read
the charts, ask your adviser to review the information with
you.
- Check the summer schedule of the college/university you
wish to attend to determine if the course you want is offered.
Inquire about enrollment
and registration procedures.
- If the institution is in-state, you must submit the Michigan
Uniform Undergraduate Guest Application to the Office of the Registrar
for certification of your academic standing. You can do this by
going to: http://www.reg.msu.edu/ROInfo/EnrReg/GuestStatus.asp.
Click on "Generate
Your Michigan Uniform Undergraduate Guest Application,"
fill out and submit form, and wait for a reply from the Registrar's
Office. The Guest Application should then be sent to the institution
you plan to attend. Or you may pick up a copy of the guest application
form from 1415 EB.
- If you are considering a course that is not listed on the Transfer
MSU web page, you should have the course
evaluated by the appropriate MSU department before
you enroll in it. Obtain a Guest Course Approval Form from
1415 Engineering Building or 150 Administration Building. Bring
a copy of the college/university's catalog and
course descriptions to the MSU department that offers the
equivalent course for approval. Complete the form, obtain the
appropriate signatures, and take it to 250 Administration Building.
- After you have completed the course(s), you must request
that the college/university you attend mail an official transcript
to MSU so that you can receive credit toward your MSU degree.
Have the transcript mailed to:
Transfer Credit Evaluation
Admissions Office
250 Administration Building
Michigan State University
East Lansing, MI 48824
Additional Notes:
- Any course work that you complete elsewhere transfers to MSU
only as credit; the grade does not transfer.
- You must have a passing grade in each transfer course and a
2.0 (or C) average at the guest institution for courses to transfer.
- You may not transfer credits from a community college to MSU
once you have accumulated 56 total credits. (For example, if
at the end of this term, you'll have 50 credits earned, you may
transfer back 6 credits from a 2-year college.)
- Students may transfer courses from a 4-year institution at
any time before their senior year. Transfer credits during the
senior year are possible, but restricted, so see
your adviser for details.
- Transfer credit will not appear on your record for as many
as 2-4 weeks (possibly longer for course taken during the summer
semester) after MSU has received your transcript. If you plan
to use transfer credits to reach junior standing, you will not
received word about admission to your engineering major until
we receive official notice of your transferred credits from the
Registrar's Office.
- If the summer course you plan to complete is a prerequisite
to any course in which you expect to enroll at MSU for the following
Fall or Spring semester, you must request
an override for each course that has that prerequisite from
the department offering the course.Check the department
website to determine its override procedures.
- If you have any questions please see your
academic adviser.
