Frequently Asked Advising Questions

Topic: Credits

What happens if I drop below full time status (12 credits)?

You should always check with your academic adviser before you drop below 12 credits (full time status). Dropping to part time can affect your financial aid, scholarships, and loans, your health insurance, and your on-campus status. If you are an international student, be sure to also check with the international student's office in the International Center before dropping to part time status.

How many credits do I need to be a sophomore? What happens if I don't reach sophomore standing by the end of my first two semesters?

You need 28 total credits (including MSU and transfer credits) to be a sophomore. If you do not have 28 credits at the end of your first two semesters, it is not a problem. You are not required to have 28 credits within any specific time frame.

How many credits do I need to be a junior? What happens if I don't reach junior standing by the end of my second year?

You need 56 total credits (including MSU and transfer credits) to be a junior. You are not required to have 56 credits at the end of your second year. The most important thing to remember is that you must apply for admission to the College when you reach 56 credits, whether that is after three, four, five or even six semesters at MSU.

How many credits do I need to be a senior? What should I do when I reach senior standing?

You are a senior when you reach 88 total credits (include MSU and transfer credits). When you reach senior standing, you should schedule an appointment with your academic advisor to make sure you're on track for graduation. You should also be sure to see the Career Services and Placement Coordinator for Engineering, Ms. Jennifer Jennings, in room 1340 Engineering Building to get started on your career search and for resume preparation. You should meet with your academic advisor every term after you become a senior to make sure you meet all requirements and deadlines necessary to graduate.
