Frequently Asked Advising Questions

Topic: Advising

How do I find out who my adviser is?

The link http://www.egr.msu.edu/egr/programs/bachelors/advising.php will provide you with a list of the College of Engineering majors. Click on a major to receive advisor information. If you're still not sure, please call (517) 355-6616 ext 1.

How do I schedule an appointment with my adviser?

If you are not sure who your adviser is or how to make an appointment, you can call the Undergraduate Studies Office at (517) 355-6616 ext.1 for assistance. In most cases, please do not email your adviser to set up an appointment.

When should I come to see my adviser?

You are welcome to see your adviser as often as is necessary to have your questions answered! We strongly encourage you to meet with your adviser once a semester. The better your adviser knows you, the better she/he can help you. Your adviser can assist you with concerns about classes, admission to your major, repeating classes, course selection, finding learning resources across campus, exploration of engineering and some other majors, possible careers in engineering, info on Co-op internships and Study Abroad, contacts for engineering student groups, tutoring, volunteer opportunities, and placement resources (to name just a few).

When should I email my adviser? How long will it take my adviser to email me back?

You should email your adviser only when you have a question that you think your adviser can answer in a couple of sentences, and your adviser will normally get back to you within 2 business days. If you are unsure if your adviser can give you a "quick answer," go ahead and email us. If we believe the topic requires further discussion, we will suggest you schedule an appointment. And by the way, "what classes should I take next semester?" is not a question we will answer over email. Each student is different and there are many variables that must be taken into account when you choose your courses.
